New School, Loads of New Progress!

Emarie has been attending preschool for the last 3 years in Provo district where I worked. But as of November when sweet little Ryker was born, I have quit working there. It got really hard to take her and pick her up each day, especially considering she was only there about 3 hours a day. So we talked seriously about placing her in Apline district where we are now living. This was an extremely hard decision to come to because I know everyone at the school and in the kindergarten class she would have gone to in Provo, including the children, who were the same she'd been going to school for the last 3 years. I know how they do their IEP's, they have all known my girls since before she was born, they love her..... It was really, really hard to even think about her going anywhere else.... But we decided we'd just check things out and found out she could go to one of 3 schools:

Dan Peterson- an all inclusive school in American Fork, meaning it is a school just for special needs children and all the way up to 22 year olds.

Hillcrest- a typical elementary school that has self contained classrooms.

Orem Elementary- same as above ^

We have had a few incidents that have persuaded us to think about placing Emarie in an all inclusive school. She never had any bad experiences at her preschool even though she was around typical children there. But that is part of something I have always known, children will see disabled children no differently if they grow up and are around them regularly. So that is one strong point to keeping her in a regular ed school.... but does that always benefit her?

We went school shopping well before we decided anything
Her backpack was her favorite thing we got at Target that day, and she hugged it all through the store and all the way home! And she still hugs it on the way to and from school everyday! Though she had a bit of a tough time deciding between this one and Minnie Mouse, I'm pretty sure she's confident in her decision with Rapunzel ;)
And here she is will all of her school stuff.... she actually picked out her first day outfit when we were in Park City at the end of July (don't hold your breath, but still hoping to do a post about that!)

So we decided to make an appointment to just go look at Dan Peterson, and after that we were completely sold! They have a sensory room that Em absolutely loved! They also had an all adaptive playground that is all wheelchair accessible and she loved that too.
My two cute kids enjoying their swings! FYI it was another 100 degree day when we went, so we stayed out there as long as we could stand.... but it wasn't very long (Utah has had the hottest summer in history, with over 20 days of record breaking heat, and July held more days over 100 degrees than under :P)

The principal there was someone I could see myself being friends with and she had taken the time to find out about Emarie from the preschool before we came that day, which I don't know many principals that would do that with their busy schedules! They also have 3 full-time nurses there everyday, which put me at a lot more ease knowing I wouldn't have to worry so much about her allergies and asthma, nor her feedings.

So it was a snap decision.... our tour was Wednesday, we did her IEP and special healthcare plan on Monday, and she started for the first day of school on Tuesday (the 20th of August). Here are some pictures of her first day :)

The traditional front porch shot, she was eager to get going, so wasn't very cooperative for these
But thanks for the subtle smile Em :)

This is once we got there, and again she was eager to go inside, so she wasn't having it! I love this outfit she picked out at the Carter's outlet in Park City

This is once we got in her classroom, she was a little nervous, but that really didn't last long!

This was her teacher trying to ease her nerves by asking her to help her set up their next activity.

So they want her to be there all day and she will be in full-swing with her services, did I mention they have a pool for PT??! But since she was only use to being at school 3 hours a time and 4 days a week, I thought it best to try and ease her into it.... So the first week she started at 12:30, which sadly was only one day because she woke up the next day with the stomach flu and her little brother got hit hard with strep and hand, foot and mouth disease! We still aren't sure how or where he got so sick, but there'll be more on that later....

So the next week was when she finally had her second day and she started going at 11:30. And next week she'll be starting at 10:30, and the week after that will be full days and hopefully she will be on the bus both ways by then. I am still having to take her and pick her up at this point because we didn't get her info in enough time for her to be on the bus right away, but I'm told they're working on it, so hopefully after labor day sometime that week she might start going home on the bus.

Her second day (which was the next Monday), her teacher told me that she used verbal communication and said the phrase "red star" during a shape game they played. This was not a repeat of something she'd heard, this was her telling them which one she wanted..... So this was not only saying clear words (that all the adults in the room understood mind you!), but it was knowing what color red is, and what shape a star is! I know my girl is smart, but unfortunately not many are privy to see that..... it took her until year 3 to say a single word in preschool! She signed, pointed and communicated in other ways before that, but 3 years before she spoke a real word in school..... day 2 at this new school and she said something I've never even heard her say! More solidarity that we made the right decision.... but hold on until you see what day 3 brought....

This is something her teacher showed me on her third day of school. She handed it to me and said, "Obviously she has been worked with and taught how to write her name, but we never saw any info on that in her IEP....." I was blown away as I said, "You mean..... she did this by herself??" And then there was shock on her face..... I told her she has written her name with lots and lots of help (hand over hand type help), and then we both had tears in our eyes. This is proudly being displayed on the fridge!

So I'm sure you will be seeing much more amazing things from this girl, I am really excited about this year!

The Results Are In....

With a measly total of 34 votes, girls beat out boys by 2 votes (18 to 16).... wish we'd had more people care to vote, but that's just the way it goes. Also I would say I don't count about 3 of those votes since Steve cheated the system ;)

We were coy about telling people when we were actually finding out since we wouldn't be sharing it until the next day. But at 7 pm we walked into the Dr's office to see what this sweet baby would be.

The face was actually the first thing we saw :) Made me cry. Em waved to us the first time we saw her on screen, and this time we got "looked" at

Little legs crossed.... had me worried for just a sec that we wouldn't get a peek at the "goods" ;) But low and behold...
No mistaking!

Y'all were wrong.... just saying!

Outside the dr.'s office after the ultrasound..... I even wore my blue shirt!

So as I mentioned before, we waited until the next day to let everyone know what we found out. My cousin Alexis (2 months older than me) is also expecting and is just a week or two behind me. She also found out what she was having the next day.... which is why we waited, so that we could do a fun reveal together. Alexis came up with the idea to fill a black garbage bag with either pink or blue balloons and release them at the same time with the family gathered around. Only problem was that Lexi's appointment was kind of late and we didn't want the reveal to be really late, so I said that I would buy the balloons after my appointment. I knew the color I needed and then just got 5 of each for Alexis. I put all of the balloons in the garbage sacks before we headed over to my grandparents, so that everything would be all ready. I put the 2 for Lexi in the storage room of the basement and told her that I had marked the one with blue balloons with a small marker mark on the knot of the tie so that she wouldn't have to try and open them to know which was which. And the rest is history...

Steve posted this picture on my Facebook wall shortly after with the caption that said, "Emarie was right!" Because just the day before when I was getting her up in the morning I had asked her if she thought she was going to have a baby brother... or, but before I could finish, she very boldly and clearly said, "I do!" So she knew it was a brother all along!

Someone had also asked in a comment on Facebook on the above picture why we were releasing balloons, and one of my dear friends (an affected young adult of ch18 actually) stated that she thought we were doing it for my sister..... how sweet is that? And I didn't even think of that! Even more special because my cousin too has lost a sibling to a car wreck, her brother Brooks.

Blue balloons all around! We will have 2 baby boys only a couple weeks apart! So fun, especially since we live so close to each other, and grew up together ourselves! And NO the pregnancies were not planned.... do people really realize what they are actually asking when they ask this??! And neither of us knew what were in the other's bags! So it was really fun!

And here's the video of the whole thing. And I must feel the need to defend myself here because I got so frustrated that mine didn't come out at the same time.... plus the hormones (I suggest turning the sound way down)! Haha!

I have already bought some clothes of course! Actually the first thing I bought was from some generous Kohl's cash that one of my fellow ch18 mom's sent to me (she lives in Canada and just went shopping there when they were visiting the states recently, and knew that she wouldn't use it before it expired without having one near her).... but seriously, how lucky am I?! Unfortunately they expired before we would find out, so I bought myself some maternity jeans and a maternity cami for layering (since all my regular ones are not working out too well anymore!) and then a generic layette set. But the day after we found out, I took the layette back and got one that screamed a little more boy than yellow ducks ;)

I have since bought this little number online to save on some shipping for a dress I got for me :) It isn't here yet, but here's what it looks like... and boy am I excited for this one!

Now who says shopping for boys is no fun??!

And here's the most recent belly shot of me. Taken between 16 and 17 weeks on Father's Day

And can't go without adding a picture of the the whole reason we stopped to take pictures in the first place!
Em and her wonderful daddy!

The rest of April...

*Play song, "First Day of My Life" with this post

Not too much to report in the last day of this month. I started working full days again after Spring Break, which was the 16th. I guess my reward was a horrible virus :P Started off with the worst sore throat I have ever had for the first 4 days, thought for sure it was strep and that Em was getting it too, but when I took us both in to be cultured, it was negative. Thankfully the doctor took pity on me and gave me a script for something he called a "miracle rinse", which consisted of 1 part Benadryl, 1 part Lidocaine and 1 part antacid. Nasty stuff, but it brought down the swelling in my throat and numbed it. After the sore throat cleared up, it was onto lovely chest congestion, sinus pain, runny nose and a wicked cough. I am on day 8 now, and I think Em is one day behind me. Still doesn't seem as though there's an end in sight, but I have heard from others that eventually it gets better. I really wouldn't wish this on anyone else, it has been awful and medicine hasn't helped much. I hate when people think it's good you didn't test for something bacterial.... but if it had been bacterial, I would have started on an antibiotic and would have gotten relief within 24 hours and probably would have been completely rid of it several days ago!

Anyway, so that is mostly what has been going on, Em has been taking it much better than her poor mom! She is amazing.... hope you don't tire of me telling you that!

Before the sickness mess began, we attended a birthday party for Diane's youngest (wonderful lady who watches Em), and another little girl, McKell that Diane also watches who we've known since she was born. Her mom actually use to be Em's PT when she was in PEEP.

Here's a slideshow from the party

We have enjoyed some insane weather for April! A couple of days with temps in the 90's! Which in my opinion is way, way, way too hot for spring when there's no pools open! And it kind of stunk that the nicest days were when Em and I were home taking sick days :P

Being sick sometimes has it's perks. Been able to do some shopping online. Found this adorable swimsuit through another Ch18 mom....
I love the vintage look! So wish I could find one similar for me that wasn't over $80!!
This one was $26.99 in case you were wondering.... but the biggest they go is 4T :( They are quite unique in that they snap at the bottom much like a onesie. Ideal for a child still in diapers (makes changing much easier), or a young girl who's recently potty trained (makes going much faster, and the swimsuit doesn't have to touch the dirty floor!). Also, since we're planning to hit the beach this summer when we're in Texas for the ch18 conference, we thought this one would be ideal when we need to hook our girl up to her feeding pump (that is always hard in traditional suits!). Now that I've done a complete advertisement for them ;) If you'd like one, you can go here.

And I finally got my first pair of Toms! Some for Em too :)
Love how comfortable they are! And Em's look a little big because we got them the size she needs for when she wears her DAFOs (which is about 4 sizes bigger than her regular foot size!). We thought they would be nice for practicing walking because of how light and flexible they are!

But not much else went on, kind of happens when you're sick though! Here's hoping May is much healthier!
